What is Ethanol Fuel?

When we take a look at the ethyl alcohol or ethanol fuel (C2H5OH) for India Ethanol fuel is not new to us, Yes it's true. For decades ethanol blended with petrol was about 2 to 5 percent, Let see what is ethanol fuel is and how it's going to have an impact with the petrol blend.

What is Ethyl alcohol or Ethanol Fuel:

Ethanol fuel is one of the biofuels containing ethyl alcohol produced by the fermentation process and this kind of chemical is also found in alcoholic beverages. Most of the ethanol fuel is prepared by biomass feedstock or prepared by vegetable waste, mainly in India major ethanol fuel is prepared from the sugarcane feedstock and remains from the food grains such as maize and surplus rice stocks.

What is ethanol fuel

Advantages of Ethanol Fuel:

1. Reduce Global warming

The significance of ethanol fuel is less carbon when compared with traditional fossil fuel, the feedstock needs carbon to grow and release the same amount of carbon while it's burned, in this way, ethanol fuel makes carbon neutral. But in the traditional fossil fuel carbon neutralization takes a long time when compared to ethanol carbon emission, because the formation of the fossil fuel takes a long time and the usage of the fossil fuel is also high.

2. Renewable Resource

Ethanol fuel is prepared purely from biomass, biomass feedstock like corn, sugarcane, etc.. These kinds of feedstock are renewable sources that need a photosynthesis process to grow. As long as we have sun energy to do photosynthesis we can produce endless biofuels like ethanol.

3. Development in the country's Economy

India has more agricultural land, and by using this ability we can produce the maximum amount of raw materials to prepare ethanol fuel. This leads to building new plants and new job opportunities and the export of ethanol fuels to other countries will also increase.

4. Ethanol can be produced from various organic matter.

Production of Ethanol fuel is not dependent on specific byproducts like corn and sugarcane, it can also be produced from various amounts of organic byproducts. One of the best examples of an organic byproduct is cellulose ethanol production, which means we can also produce ethanol fuel from non-food products like algae, grass, wood, etc. So, creating ethanol fuel is independent of various organic matters, it doesn’t require specific byproducts.

 5. Availability

The availability of ethanol fuel is in all climatic conditions because the main feedstock for the ethanol fuel is sugarcane and crops. More than the requirement of the whole country needs, we have more cropland to grow the feedstock organic matter for the ethanol fuel.

ADVANTAGES OF ETHANOL FUEL

Disadvantage of Ethanol Fuel:

1.  Required Large cropland

If the demand for ethanol fuel is created more cropland is needed to grow the organic matter for the biomass feedstock and based on the demand for ethanol fuel the cropland has to expand. In this case, the maintenance of the huge cropland becomes difficult and needs more manpower to maintain the land.

2. Ethanol is difficult to vaporize

Ethanol is an alcohol, and its attack is a good coolant and antifreeze agent for the engine. But in cold conditions, ethanol is quite difficult to vaporize when compared to petrol, and external things have to be added, like a grid heater to warm up the engine for ethanol vaporization. To avoid this a minimal amount of petrol will be added to solve this problem.

3. It is a corrosion fuel

Ethanol has the ability to absorb water, which makes it difficult to transfer through pipelines to long-distance because of the corrosion due to water absorption. It also tends to damage the vehicle's engine parts which are sitting for too long.

Disadvantages of ethanol fuel

4. Vehicle Maintenance will increase

As we have seen the characteristics of the ethanol fuel from the above point, in vehicles the engine parts have to be checked regularly due to indirect damage caused by the ethanol fuel. If the maintenance is not done well, it will lead to a huge disaster for the vehicle.

5.  Poor mileage

When compared with petrol, ethanol has lower energy which leads to poor mileage for the vehicle that is running on ethanol fuel. For example, ethanol fuel takes 6.5 liters to replace the 4.5 liters of petrol.
